Apple species and varieties

The best varieties of apples from September to December:

  • "Red Astrakhan" : ripe end of August, storage in October. Resists extreme cold. Good fruit, medium size. Much better at harvest time.
  • "Belle of Boskoop": ripe in December, storage in February. Vigorous, ideal for cold and humid climates. Huge fruit, a little sour.
  • "Chanteclerc (Belchard)" : ripe in September, storage in November. Fine, crunchy, tangy flesh. Flowers late, well suited to cold climates.
  • "Cox Orange Pippin" : ripe in October, storage in January. Medium caliber, sweet fruit to grow in flat shapes because it is not very vigorous.
  • "Delbarestivale" : ripe in August, storage in October. Big fruit, crunchy flesh, little anise taste. For semi-free forms.
  • "Elstar" : Quite sensitive to diseases, storage is short. Large, predominantly red apple, tangy taste, sweet and fragrant flesh.
  • "Florina (Querina Florina)" : ripe in October, storage in February. Very well resistant to diseases. Firm, slightly tart flesh, to be grown in the open air.
  • "Great Alexander" : ripe in September, storage in October. Consume quickly, suitable for all forms. Pleasant, juicy, crunchy fruit.
  • "Idared" : ripe in October, storage in February. Very good shelf life, fine, tender, sweet flesh. Fairly sensitive to powdery mildew.
  • "Queen of the reinettes" : ripe in November, storage in December. Robust and productive. Suitable for all regions, ideal in great free form.
  • "Royal Gala" : ripe in October, conservation in February. Productive and vigorous. Fleshy, crunchy, excellent fruit.
  • "Starkrimson" : ripe in October, storage in December. Productive and rustic. Very fast fruit set. Slightly floury flesh.
  • "Transparent" : ripe in August, storage in September. Very good fruit, tangy. Consume quickly, the fruit falls too easily.

The best apple varieties from December to March:

  • "Calville white" : ripe in November, storage in February. One of the best ! Large fruit, sensitive to scab.
  • "Delbard Jubilee" : ripe in October, storage in February. Not very sensitive to diseases. Suitable for trellised forms.
  • "Gloster" : ripe in October, storage in March. Excellent fruit, vigorous tree. Quick fruit set. Perfect for pastries.
  • "Golden Delicious" : ripe in December, storage in March. Ideal in cold climates. Tasty grown in the garden.
  • "Granny Smith" : ripe in November, storage in March. One of the most tangy. Best apple for cholesterol-lowering diets.
  • "Jonagold" : ripe in November, storage in January. Very vigorous, productive tree. Fairly tender flesh. Fairly sensitive to powdery mildew.
  • "Jonathan" : ripe in November, storage in January. Large fruit, sweet flesh. Suitable for full wind forms.
  • "Ontario" : ripe in January, storage in March. Medium vigor. Trellised forms. Soft, delicate flesh.
  • "White reinette from Canada" : ripe in December, storage in February. Very fragrant flesh. Appreciates humid climates and altitude up to 1000 m.
  • "Reinette tramp": ripe in December, storage in March. Perfect for western France. Grow in semi-free forms. Firm, juicy, tangy flesh.
  • "Reinette grise du Canada" : ripe in December, storage in March. Good vigor, tree subject to alternation. Rather soft flesh, very fragrant.
  • "Winter Banana": ripe in November, storage in January. Light banana scent. Very fertile, good pollinator. Does well in cordon.
