How to choose a parquet in floating installation?

Composed in part of noble wood, the floating parquet represents a good option to dress the floor.

Easy to install, this coating is less expensive than a solid wood floor.

Among the criteria for choosing a floating parquet are the type of wood, the thickness and the color of the planks.

A type of wood according to use

Laminate or engineered parquet is available in various species. However, the latter do not display the same resistance. Among the woods frequently used for floating floors are fir, alder, spruce or chestnut. “Soft” essences suitable for rooms with little passage. For those with heavy traffic (entrance, hallway), it is advisable to opt for harder species such as maple, eucalyptus, beech or locust. The same goes for oak, a coating that is both robust and durable. Less expensive than these different floors, laminate floors offer many advantages. This type of coating consists of a protective film, a layer of decor paper and wood fibers, and not noble wood, is not considered a real parquet. In contrast, laminate flooring imitates flooring, tiles or concrete to perfection. Less stable, it is nevertheless appreciated for its ease of maintenance. This coating is used to dress the hallways, the living room, the stairs or the most frequented areas in the house according to its classification of use.

The dimensions and aesthetics of the boards

Unlike the aesthetic, which essentially depends on individual taste, the dimensions of floating floors are not chosen at random.

The choice of dimensions of the laminated boards

It is important to note that the quality of a floating floor does not necessarily depend on its thickness. Indeed, it is quite possible to find an 8 mm parquet that is more robust than 13 mm laminated planks. The main difference is that thinner coatings offer a wider choice of dimensions (length and width). Whatever thickness you choose, the level of comfort is optimal if the sub-floor is uniform. On the other hand, a thicker parquet is recommended on a support presenting irregularities. In addition, engineered parquet has a width of up to 300 mm. Narrow planks are generally recommended in small rooms.

The preferred color

Aesthetics is a criterion that should not be overlooked when buying engineered parquet, knowing that the work to be done is doomed to last over time. It is advisable to choose the color not only according to taste, but also the surface of the affected room. Indeed, a light shade will bring softness and luminosity in a small room. Also, a light floor tends to make the space bigger. Thus, a gray, beige or white floating floor is perfect to complete a contemporary style decor.

In contrast, a darker coating brings charm and character to a house with traditional inspirations. However, its installation in a spacious room is recommended. On the aesthetic side, dust and any scratches will be more visible on a dark colored parquet.

Installing parquet in a bathroom

A damp room par excellence, the bathroom cannot be fitted with a floating parquet floor, because any infiltration can be the basis of many problems. It is therefore advisable to take advantage of a parquet floor to choose a species such as teak or chestnut that is naturally rot-resistant and to opt for a glued installation.
