Pond: the choice of plants

When you have a small pond, it is easy to plant a few aquatic plants in it. But don't drown in the cash!

Some garden centers sell unsuitable species as "aquatic plants" which eventually die off. To choose these plants well, it is necessary to distinguish between wetland plants (which grow on the banks), swamp plants (which need less than 10 cm of water), shallow water plants (between 10 and 20 cm of water), moderately deep water (20 to 35 cm) and those of deep water (between 35 and 90 cm). Finally, floating plants don't care how deep the pond or pond is. Also add oxygenating plants which are very useful if you have fish.

Aquatic plants for ponds

From bank plants, we count the ragwort, gunneras, swamp iris, bulbous iris, Siberian iris, marsh orchids (Dactylorhisa praetermissa), marsh fireweed, horsetail, euphorbias Swamps, impatiens from the Himalayas, rushes, cinquefoils aquatic ...

Those of most suitable swamp are the watercress, reeds, water clovers, mints aquatic, aquatic knotweed.

For the deeper waters, prefer water lilies, lotuses, thalias, cattails, sagittarians, calthas ...

Finally, on the side of floating plants or oxygenating plants, opt for water aloes, azolleae, water chestnuts, water hyacinths, duckweed, water salads, utriculars or water crassettes, waterweed, hydrocotyls, watermilfoils and pondweed.

For a successful plantation

The failure of the growing aquatic plants is often caused by a location error. Each plant corresponds to a specific depth of water.

Reminder: the depth indicated on the sheets is given in relation to the collar of the plant (upper edge of the basket for potted plantings). Aquatic plants are quite invasive and must be regularly slowed down in their expansion.

Fish and ducks will regulate them more easily. From time to time, an organic treatment against algae is useful. In winter, if you have fish, consider putting a balloon or a bundle on the surface of the pond so that they can breathe in case of frost!
